A wait for the Ages

Last season, the MSJ lacrosse team showed marked improvement, even earning a spot among the nation’s best, and the credit is due to the key additions of Henry Clark ’27 at defense and the emergence of Jack Birrane ’26. In the 2024-25 season, the Gaels held their ground against powerhouse teams like the three-time MIAA champions McDonogh, Spalding, and Calvert Hall. They may have lost, but the margin was telling—just five goals compared to the double-digit defeats of previous years. It’s clear: the Gaels are not the same team they once were.

The Gaels were put to the test by Boys’ Latin, a team that has seen the championship field multiple times over the past five years. The Gaels gave them a run for their money. The Gaels never trailed by less than two points, taking the lead from each other one after another. After a last-minute battle, the Gaels clear the ball, and Coach Reid calls for a timeout, giving the players a reset and time to formulate a game plan. The huddle breaks, and a controversial call is made; referees claim that a player was offside before the whistle, sadly giving the last minute for a Boys Latin win, losing by one.
Teams like McDonogh, Spalding, and Calvert Hall are set to lose major contributors, with at least 14 seniors graduating. But the Gaels aren’t immune to roster changes either. Key players like Short Stick Defensive Midfielders (SSDM) Mason Suazo ’25 and Nicholas Kern ’25 are departing, leaving a void to fill. The question now is whether Amari Vass ’26, Beckett Flurry ’26, and Tyler Jenson ’26

Key players like Short Stick Defensive Midfielders (SSDM) Mason Suazo ’25 and Nicholas Kern ’25 are departing, leaving a void to fill. The question now is whether Amari Vass ’26, Tyler Jenson ’26, and newly appointed team captain Beckett Flury ’26 can step up and form a new dynamic duo. With promising JV prospect Andrew Van Bavel ’27, ready to make their mark, the SSDM position is anyone’s guess.

With graduated senior Austen Slade ’25, Cole Furman ’26 will step between the pipes, playing a key role in the defense. The rising senior stepped onto the championship field during his sophomore year on the JV team. Sadly, it ended with a loss to the Loyola Dons.
The Class of ’26 is stepping up as the new offensive starting lineup. Talented players like Jake Minderline, Reed Lambdin, Tyler Appenzeller, and Jack Birrane are set to fill the shoes of the graduated seniors—bringing skill, energy, and a fresh dynamic that promises to elevate the Gaels’ offense to the next level.
The Mount Saint Joseph Gaels lacrosse team enters the upcoming season with confidence and high expectations. With a strong, balanced roster and standout talent across the field, the Gaels are poised to make a significant impact in the MIAA. The team’s fast-paced style, disciplined defense, and sharp offensive execution make them a serious threat to any opponent. Backed by a dedicated coaching staff, Coach Reid, and a determined mindset, the Gaels are ready to take on the challenge—and all signs point to a high-potential season ahead.
