Discovering Joy and Connection Through Fly Fishing Adventures

Why is one calm? Fishing has brought so much joy to my life and lets me calm down for a second and take a break from life. Thanks to fishing, building connections with family and friends is much easier because it gives us something to bond over.

The Gunpowder River is a prestigious fly-fishing stream, and many people come from all over the country to fish. Before Trout Unlimited’s positive influence, the stream wasn’t what it is today. Trout Unlimited is a well-respected brand, and many people use it for fishing bags and other accessories. When a well-respected brand like Trout Unlimited tries to fix or improve a mid-cared-for stream, one of two things can happen: it can flourish, or it can be destroyed.

Trout Unlimited stepped in to partner with the Maryland DNR to negotiate the landmark 1986 Flow Agreement. In short, this agreement ensured that water temperatures would stay cold, between 55–68 Fahrenheit, year-round. Shortly after, the water started to flow better, so they didn’t have to worry about the driver drying up. The process they used was effective because they did it at the right times and in the right order, creating a clear cause-and-effect sequence. After this, they could stock the gunpowder because of the cold temperatures, and today, 95% of trout are wild, another positive effect of the process they used.

Fly fishing isn’t easy. I didn’t learn how until recently, and thanks to Trout Unlimited, I got to experience the joy of hooking into my first trout. Finding clean, fishable, beautiful trout streams isn’t easy in the U.S., and I am so grateful to Trout Unlimited for the impact and chance it gave me to fish it. Without TU’s influence, the Gunpowder would not be where it is today, let alone a top 100 trout stream in the country.
