This resource can be used as a very helpful tool for students and teachers alike, but using AI can have several disadvantages and unethical problems with it, despite its possible beneficial uses.
For students, AI can be a very beneficial tool for studying for tests. If you feed ChatGPT a review packet or the topics you need to study for a test, it can easily generate a document with various questions on those topics. It can also help with brainstorming projects. If you are not sure what you want to do for a class, you can ask ChatGPT to list ideas you could pursue, then choose your favorite from the ones it gives you. It can also check your essays for punctuation, plagiarism, and grammar mistakes that you make in them; this can help you see what you need to fix and allow you to learn from what you did previously.
Now, AI can be used in many good ways for students, but it can also be used for unethical purposes. One of the most common bad uses by students is cheating. Students can ask ChatGPT questions from tests, quizzes, and assignments to get answers, which is unfair to students who also study or put in effort to complete them. Plus, if they get caught by the teacher, their test/quiz might be put in as a zero. Students who also often use AI to cheat or complete assignments might not learn and end up getting bad grades in the long term. Another thing that isn’t necessarily unethical, but some teachers also don’t allow students to use it in some classes, ethical or not, so using it in any way could lead to getting zeroes on grades or possibly getting in trouble.
Though students use ChatGPT much more in comparison to teachers, teachers can still use it in a variety of ways to help both students and themselves. One of the most beneficial uses that they could use it for is grading tests and quizzes. AI can get grading wrong if it is too complicated, but if it is grading something very simple, it can easily assign a grade to a test or quiz. Another use is checking whether students are cheating, like using ZeroGPT, an AI detector for writing, but it cannot be relied on heavily and can give false flags if something is or isn’t AI. Also, it can make you seem like you don’t put much effort into your students, since some students or other teachers/faculty might think it’s lazy to use AI, but of course, this can vary person to person.

But I think we need to define boundaries for AI on how it should be used, and also figure out ways AI can be used ethically. In my opinion, I think AI should only be used as a tool or an assistant and not something that you should be relying on. I don’t think it should ever be used to create or complete assignments, since assignments should be more thoughtful for students. For example, if they specifically discussed something during class, the teacher could add a question about that topic.
In the future, AI could replace education and might even teach students in the future, which would lead to a lot of people losing their jobs. This could be a massive problem for many people, but hopefully, this does not happen anytime soon. Overall, AI is something that we still need to understand and is still developing, but hopefully, we will be able to agree on a common policy for the usage of AI, so that the lives of both teachers and students will be better.
