In the NBA today, one of the biggest questions is, what will the Miami Heat do about their star player, Jimmy Butler…
This saga has been going on for many months, starting from this past May, and has picked up a lot of steam recently as Jimmy has officially requested a trade from the Miami Heat. This began when Jimmy made a comment on if he were playing during the previous playoffs during the 2023-24 season, where they were eliminated by the eventual NBA champion Boston Celtics led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown; Butler said, “If I were playing the Celtics and the Knicks would be home.” Miami Heat president Pat Riley would reply to Butler’s comment in May, saying, “If you’re not on the court playing against Boston or on the court against the New York Knicks, then you should keep your mouth shut.” Nobody thought that one comment like this would be just the tip of the iceberg compared to where we are in their saga. Butler is currently serving a seven-game suspension, making him unavailable and missing the entire road trip out on the West Coast. So far, they’ve been against teams like the LA Clippers, Sacramento Kings, and even the Portland Trail Blazers. Butler was given this seven-game suspension on Friday, January 3rd, 2025 after the Heat lost their game the previous night against the Indiana Pacers 128-115. He said that he preferred a trade out of Miami on Christmas morning but truly requested the trade on January 2nd, 2025.

The final game of the suspension and their current road trip will occur on January 15th against Lebron James, Anthony Davis, and the Los Angeles Lakers at 10:00 pm on ESPN. Butler is expected to return to the team after his suspension is up and keep playing for the Heat until their season ends; his first game back, if he suits up, will be against the Denver Nuggets on Friday, January 17th, in Miami.

Teams like the Memphis Grizzlies, The Milwaukee Bucks, and the Phoenix Suns have been linked to in attempts to trade for Butler. On January 14th, 2025, it was reported that in a face-to-face meeting with president Pat Riley Butler reiterated his trade request and told him he would not sign a new deal with the team after this season and only would pick up his 52 million dollar player option to be used as a trade piece during the offseason if he chooses to pick it up.

However, in contrast, it’s just delaying the inevitable. Either way, they like it or not, Butler will be gone regardless, and I believe if he leaves during Free Agency, it will be a sign and trade so the Heat can at least get something in return for Butler. Butler’s time in Miami will more than likely be overshadowed by two things: the first is Butler not being able to achieve his ultimate goal of winning a championship, and the second is him asking out as he has in the past.
