On December 29th, 2024, former President Jimmy Carter passed away at the very old age of 100. He spent the last two years of his life in hospice and died of cancer. His presidency is not considered one of the best. The energy crisis in 1979, the Iran hostage crisis, and a deep mistrust in the government following the preceding administration led to what is viewed as a less successful presidency that only lasted 1 term. However, Carter’s legacy is more prominent after his time in office. His humanitarian efforts, radiant kindness, and humble lifestyle will be what he’s remembered for.

He negotiated the release of American political prisoners in Nicaragua in 1986 and of American Aijalon Gomes from North Korea in 2010. He was a negotiator with North Korea under the Clinton administration and offered his assistance to President Donald Trump in his first term in talks with North Korea.
Alongside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, they founded the Carter Center in 1982. The nonprofit organization is still in operation to this day, promoting democracy and freedom worldwide, and fighting disease. The Carter Center is working in 80 countries around the world, improving the lives of its citizens. The Center has observed 125 elections in 40 countries, they are a major contributor to the near eradication of Guinea worm disease, and have helped improve healthcare in over thousands of African communities.
Jimmy Carter wasn’t just a humanitarian through philanthropy; he worked hands-on to make the world a better place. Alongside his wife, the Carters helped renovate and repair over 4,300 homes with Habitat for Humanity. They also visited many of the places that the Carter Center was serving, spreading kindness and joy.

His parents owned a peanut farm and warehouse in Plains, Georgia. Carter used his humble beginnings to win the presidency, appearing as an honest, hardworking American, which the country felt it needed. After his presidency, Jimmy Carter lived the rest of his life in the same town he grew up in.
Jimmy Carter has left an impact on America and the world. He embodied everything that is good about humanity and always put the needs of others first. His humanitarian work is why he is one of four presidents to win the Nobel Peace Prize. May Jimmy Carter rest in peace, and may his life encourage others to be positive change in the world.
