Soccer tactics have changed drastically, here’s why

The question of modern tactics ruining watching soccer today is a question that forces us to go back. Back when I was a kid, soccer was much more riveting to watch. Flashy skills were being utilized on the wing, up top, and in the center of the park. This is a rarity nowadays, with possession-based soccer taking over the world. Many people think that Pep Guardiola is the reason behind all of this. When he first joined Manchester City in 2016, he said he’d change soccer forever. This statement could not have come more true.

Pep came from one of the most talented teams ever in Barcelona; the tactics he set in place with those fantastic players worked exceptionally well for him, leading to great success. This is where things get interesting; people thought Pep could only do his overemphasis on possession-based tactics with Barcelona. Many argued that Barcelona focused too much on keeping possession without clear attacking intent. This leads to a slow, methodical style of play that lacks excitement for fans and may be perceived as overly cautious. Pep wanted a challenge,e so he joined a team on the come-up in Manchester City to see if he could do it in the best league.

Pep was questioned immediately in the Premier League because of his addition to the 4-1-4-1 formation. This formation was not used at all before Pep came to the premier league. The more common formations were the classic 4-4-2 and the more familiar 4-3-3. Pep had taken a mixture of the two, creating his hybrid. He utilized players in the City squad with better passing than players who stole the show, which is where this all starts.

Now, when it comes to the differences in watching soccer before the Pep era compared to now, it is unbelievable. It’s like watching a whole different game, back then there were players like Taarabt, Nani, Dembele, Ben Afra, Payet, Balotelli, and a young Christiano Ronaldo. These players all have one thing in common: their ability to put on a show during a game with skillful play and fun-to-watch attacking. Nowadays, that is a thing of the past. The last soccer player who even came close to playing anything like them was Allan Saint-Maximi, who was shipped out of the premier league because of his playstyle.

The competitiveness in the English Premier League is so unbelievable that the team’s managers can no longer sacrifice their possession for flashy skills. The league is known as the most competitive on earth because it’s known as the best league for soccer,r so all the best players are there. Also, the relegation system makes it even more competitive. For example, Leicester City won the premier league in 2016, and not even six years later, they are back in the second division. In conclusion, this extreme competitiveness has led to the demise of creative and exciting soccer players in the premier league.
